It all began in 1971, when aware of the growing interest in road cycling, and acting on their own personal love of biking for recreation, Conrad and Sarah Weiss revamped their drapeгу business workroom space to facilitate the rental of bicycles. Conrad wore a handlebar mustache and a black beret, an image that was soon captured in a caricature printed on T-shirts and balloons. People who rented their bicycles took Conrad's likeness along with them as they pedaled all over town.
In Advertising Today, publisher J. Douglas Johnson noted, "Symbols from Conrad's Bike Shop can be seen on a summer weekend from Harlem to the Battery".
A new world opened up for them when they attended their first bicycle expo at the New York Hilton Hotel in 1972 where they were able to see works of art in the form of frames and complete bicycles from Europe. The renting of bicycles soon became a thing of the past as they started to specialize in selling high quality European cycles.
The success of Conrad's Bike Shop is based on the fact that every person is treated with respect and their bicycles are handled by well informed sales consultants and worked on with the finest craftsmanship by mechanics with more than 25 years experience. Conrad's takes great pride in custom fitting a bicycle to the rider and carries most brands of frames, components, clothing and accessories.
